When I almost exclusively used a Garand in the woods, I used a lot of surplus and WWII reenactor gear with it. The stuff really worked quite well.

As others have stated, grease stays put while oil will go elsewhere over time. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic grease, and LSA on mine....
